Sterile Needles, Not Guns: We only use single-use sterile needles, never piercing guns. Needles cause much less tissue trauma and allow safe, properly sized implant-grade jewellery. Guns cannot be fully sterilized between clients and often use unknown metal studs, increasing infection and allergy risk.
Expertise & Training: Our head piercer Hannah has 16+ years’ experience and stays current with safety standards (attending global piercing conferences, including UKAPP). All staff follow strict hygiene protocols: autoclave sterilization for tools and jewellery, glove use, and one-on-one time to explain the process to your child.
Quality Implant-Grade Jewellery: We carry a curated selection of biocompatible jewellery from top brands like NeoMetal, BVLA, Anatometal, Industrial Strength, Bodygems and LeRoi. We use only implant-grade titanium or solid gold for initial piercings. A plain titanium stud is included in your piercing price; you may upgrade to a 14k/18k gold stud at additional cost.

Requirements & Consent
Age & Consent: Our lobe piercing service is available from age 6 and over. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The parent or guardian must give permission and stay for the appointment. Vela’s policy follows industry guidelines: “A professional piercer will never pierce a client without their consent… If a child asks to stop at any point, we will stop immediately”. The child’s comfort and consent are paramount.
Identification: Bring government photo ID for yourself (passport or driving license) and your child’s birth certificate or passport. If you are not the biological parent, bring legal guardianship papers. Vela requires ID for all clients at booking – it’s part of keeping everyone safe and following our insurance regulations.
What Happens During the Appointment?
After a warm greeting, we’ll review consent forms with you and your child. Hannah will explain each step in simple terms (children are welcome to ask questions). The piercing area will be cleaned and marked. Your child sits or stands as comfortable, and you can hold their hand. Using a new, autoclaved needle, Hannah will pierce the lobe in one quick motion while you count together. The stud is inserted immediately, and a sterile saline wipe is used to soothe the area. Most kids say it’s just a quick “pinch” – lobe tissue is soft, so healing is fast.
Aftercare Tips
Healing takes around 8-12 weeks for a lobe piercing. We provide detailed aftercare instructions and a follow-up check-up (usually at 4-6 weeks). In summary, Vela recommends:
The LITHA Method: The leave it the heck alone method. This means no cleaning, except for a quick rinse over when showering. It's our belief that piercings heal better when there is limited outside involvement. Your body is designed to heal itself, it will know what to do.
Leave earrings in: Keep the initial studs in place until fully healed. Removing them too soon can cause the hole to close.
Hands-off: Don’t touch or play with the new earrings. Healthy piercing sites can crust naturally; don’t pick at crusting.
Avoid water hazards: Skip swimming pools, hot tubs, and long baths for at least 6 weeks. Showering is fine.
Following these steps greatly reduces infection risk. If you notice unusual swelling, yellow/green discharge, or your child feels feverish, contact us or see a doctor immediately.
FAQ (Parents’ Questions)
Q: Is there an upper age limit? – No. We welcome clients of all ages. Lobes can be pierced anytime after age 6, whether toddler, teen, or adult. All age groups have the same healing process (older teens handle aftercare similarly to kids).
Q: Can my child bring their own earring? – No. We only use brand-new, body safe studs from our approved suppliers. This ensures biocompatibility and safety. After the healing period, you can switch to different earrings of implant-grade materials.
Q: Should we do piercings in the summer holidays? – Yes, summer (or a long break) is ideal. Having piercings done at the start of a holiday avoids school restrictions, and gives time to heal comfortably at home.
Q: What aftercare product do you recommend? – We recommend leaving the piercing alone and keeping it as dry as possible. No products needed.
Q: How can I make my child comfortable? – Explain calmly that the process is quick. You can bring a comforting toy too. During piercing, steady breathing and calm talk help (we count down together). Each child is different, but the client will be in full control of their piercing appointment.
Q: Can I watch the piercing? – Absolutely. Parents will need to be present during the piercing process. We’ll guide you through each step, so you know exactly what’s happening.
Q: What if my child changes their mind? – We will stop immediately. A professional piercer respects the client's right to change their mind. We want our clients to make their own decision, and respect their right to bodily autonomy.
Q: Do you offer aftercare check-ups? – Yes, we do. We’ll schedule a follow-up visit at the end of the healing period (or sooner if needed) to check the piercing and answer any questions. Check-ups are included and free of charge to ensure everything has healed correctly.
