Cleaning & Maintenance
Regular gentle cleaning is key. Once or twice a month, soak the chain in warm water with a drop of mild, fragrance-free soap. Use a soft toothbrush to loosen any dirt from the links. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a clean, soft cloth. A non-abrasive jewellery polishing cloth can be used occasionally to restore shine.
Always dry the chain fully after cleaning to prevent any water spots or soap residue.
Protection & Everyday Wear
Permanent jewellery is designed to be waterproof and durable, but you should still avoid harsh chemicals and snags. Let lotions, perfumes, and tanning creams fully absorb before the chain touches your skin to prevent buildup and tarnish. Pat stubborn messes (like fake tan) with a damp cloth instead of scrubbing.
Be mindful with fabrics: avoid catching chains in coarse knits, lace or sequins, and slip your hand carefully through sleeves. When drying off, pat jewellery gently rather than rubbing with a rough towel. If a snag does happen, don’t yank – gently free the chain and inspect for any kinks or loose links.

VELA’s welded chains can stay on through most activities, but take precautions during high-impact moments. Tape the chain (e.g. with sports or micropore tape) when lifting weights or playing contact sports to protect it. Remove other jewellery that could tangle with your permanent piece (for example, slide bracelets under sleeves during workouts). If swimming in chlorinated pools or salt water, rinse the jewellery with fresh water afterwards and dry it – this helps preserve its shine and prevents salt/chlorine buildup.

Yes, but we recommend protecting your jewellery before applying any tanning products. Simply place a strip of clingfilm on your arm and roll your chain loosely inside it before applying any fake tan.
Be careful not to wrap it too tightly—you'll want to be able to remove the cling film easily once you've finished applying your tan. If any product does get onto your jewellery, simply clean it afterwards with warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth to help keep it looking its best.
Can I shower or swim with it on?
Yes, our sterling silver & 14k gold filled chains are waterproof. Rinse and dry after pools or seawater to keep them bright and stop tarnishing.
